The guitars sound pretty... very harp-like. I'd have the player
re-do the solo, though. I think I would prefer the singer just
an eensy bit more forward & with a splash less reverb, although
I know a lot of music of this nature is drowing in it (doesn't
mean that your mix has to, though).
What was your signal chain on the vox? Sounds like to had to do
a bit more de-essing than you might have wanted to (or is she
from Catalonia lol)?

Cause of the blotched notes?

CAD VX2 tube LDC thru the RNC to disk.
Then EQ and an L2. with a send to an aux with SIR
Then an Antares Tube plug to warm it up on the stereo bus another =
stereo EQ and another L2.

I think they're a five-way, and they have bass ports, and oil-

I was thinking along the lines of Neil, that the guitars sound really nice,
but I may lay back a teensie bit on the picky part in the high end.
Also, I dug the verb on the vox but wondered if a teeny bit more predelay
would be in order.
Also I too wanted the vox out a bit more, as well as the harmony, I want
to hear that more for sure,
I thought I heard a ducking for a split second in the lead vox about halfway
through the song.
But all in all, I'd be happy if it were my mix. Subjective stuff.

Agreed. The guitars have a nice round, warm sound with a touch of
room. But yes, probably de-pickify a bit.
Yes, pull the vox out towards the front a bit more.
I also heard either ducking or some comp pumping on the vox. You
using Supernice on the RNC? Supernice is, well, super nice.
I listened on my Event Project-8 monitors.
One thing though - maybe it's the vocal chain, but after listening
three times through, I still can't make out the words she's singing.
Sounds like it's a whole other language....

Cujo,
>I was thinking along the lines of Neil, that the guitars sound really nice,
>but I may lay back a teensie bit on the picky part in the high end.

I have redone the mix and EQd the verb a bit.
I stripped out everything below 250hz and gradually
rammped up. This cleaned up a lot of mud and really increased clarity. I
think it makes the highs on the guitars POP more since they got the verb.
>Also, I dug the verb on the vox but wondered if a teeny bit more predelay
>would be in order.
I have not even messed with the predelay to be honest. I know it is very
important part of getting a good verb sound. The vox sound a lot different
now without so much low end verb. See what you think of the next one.
>Also I too wanted the vox out a bit more, as well as the harmony, I want
>to hear that more for sure,
I still havent increased dbs on the vox. See what you think of the second
mix (i will post later tonite)
>
>I thought I heard a ducking for a split second in the lead vox about halfway

You are probably right. A few of the peaks I brought down with automation...
I may need to tweak a couple to smooth it out.
>
>But all in all, I'd be happy if it were my mix. Subjective stuff.
Thank Cujo...I appreciate your input.
The second mix I found some things I could improve upon like Lead guiar EQ,
verb tweaks, limiting settings here and there, etc... I took the Antares
Tube out completely, but that isnt what was causing the crackling I am hearing
on the loud vocal passes. I am going to have to look at my signal chain and
see if there is some clipping somewhere.

I thought the mix was good.
I agree with Cujo though, I would like to have heard a little more pre delay
on the lead vox and maybe a little more wash on the backing vox.
All in all, a nice mix.
Bare in mind, i'm only listening on "half"decent generic computer monitors.
Well done

Sounds real purty to me. I agree with the suggestions on the reverb. =
I, too, wanted to hear the vocals more, but mostly just in certain =
passages. If it was me, I'd just ride/program the fader to keep the =
voice just on top of the mix, but I'm kind of obsessive that way. :)

Brandon, I must say she has a lovely voice, very nice job capturing the mood
too.
I like the balance now of harmony to lead vox, at first I thought they both
could come up just a tad more but when I turned up the volume on my speakers
it sat better.
Is that a nylon string guitar? Will the song be mastered?

Yes all guitars are nylon string.
What are you talkin about ....it is mastered?!!! :-)
I doubt it will be mastered.
This particular song is a wedding present for a friend of the singer.
Nothing meant for distribution.
I didn't charge them anything.
The guitarist is like a brother to me and the singer is his band mate...
well X-bandmate. Their band just broke up.
Around here it seems that studio recording has a tendancy of disolving =
bands.
I think it is because everyine finally talks about the direction=20
they want to go with the music and discover that they don't have the =
same goals.
Sad. Their group has been dropping a bunch of change into a recording =
studio here..
they haven't received a finished product and now they are no more.

HEy Cujo,
I would be interested to hear it mastered though.
I know you do this correct?
What would you charge to give this track a once over?

Thanks,

It's not just around there, it's a fairly common phenomenon,
IME. Sometimes it's because they discover they don't have the
same goals, as you mention, but more often it's due to things
like:
a.) They think all they need to get noticed & break out is a
good recording, and when their killer demo's been circulating
for a year & they still don't have a record deal, a bandmember
or two starts to lose interest & quits, then another, etc.
b.) They discover they're not so hot shit after all... like for
example, all the thousands of "hardcore fans" that they thought
they had - you know, all the ones that show up to every club
gig and are constantly telling them how great they are - don't
seem to be hardcore enough to put their money where their mouth
is & buy a CD. So they press a thousand CD's & sell a few big
batches at the first few gigs after the CD comes out, but then
a year goes by & they still have 700 left out of the 1000 they
pressed. Depression hits, bandmembers split, etc.
c.) It's a young-ish band that's been garaging & gigging for
awhile & they think they sound great - all their friends & fans
tell them so, after all - and then they start recording & all
the clams & bad-timing issues that you don't necessarily notice
live (because in a live environment five seconds after you've
tried to play that riff you can never play right, or rushed the
fill on that break for the umpteenth time, everyone's forgotten
about it; but when recording, they obviously show up again &
again on every single playback) start rearing their ugly heads.
So the alpha band-guy starts getting on the other guys' case
about this, trying to get them to step up & get tight, and this
carries beyond the studio, and pretty soon the relationship
between bandmambers has changed - the dynamic is no
longer "he's our guitarist" (it's usually a guitarist) it's
now: "he's trying to take over the band" or some such thing...
tensions develop, bandmembers quit or get fired, etc.
I've seen all of these things happen.

Oh man #3 is a big one..
They also often think for 500.00 bucks they can make a CD that sounds like
Pearl Jam (insert megaband here) And often in the middle of a session one
guy announces that it is his girlfriends office party that night and he needs
to be done by 3:00

My band has had the same core line up for a while and one of the reasons
is that we all know how many asshole musicians there are out there and how
tough it is to keep it together, we also just like playing together, when
we make money that is icing on the cake.
But so many bands don't see it that way.
One big thing I have noticed over the years is how so mediocre new bands
in the early 20's have about 1-2 years with the crowd Neil is talking about..they
feel like kings because they draw 70+ "Fans" but as soon as they start overplaying
and their crowd starts to get real jobs/kids what ever, the fan bass dries
up (at least at live shows) The real artist keep moving after this, but many
give up me thinx.
