It was really great to find this group and also Intelligent Devices new pro-audio site this week.
I have a 442, 1 EDS card running Paris v2.1, on a G4, OS 9.2.2. It was on an old G3 until this week.
If any of you could give me your opinions on whether it is better to upgrade to v3 from v2.1 or not, and why, I would appreciate them.
I found out I can still get v3 from East Coast Music for $295 but want to make sure that it is stable and worth upgrading to. It has been years since I used Paris but upon review of my back catalog I believe that everything I recorded on Paris has a unique and very pleasing sonic quality to it that I just cant get out of Logic with MOTU audio in-out.
Although I only have the 442 it works well for me as I am pretty much a one man show.
Also I would ask am I right in thinking that if I am able to find and install another EDS card that I will then have more processing power?
Thanks in advance.

Hi crashdown, and welcome!

Yes, another EDS will double your "card" tracks to 32, and double your EDS FX at the same time. Note you can't bus across submixes - the EDS FX on Submix 2 are only available to tracks on Submix 2 (well, it's not designed to permit it, but there are some more or less effective workarounds).

$295 for 3.0? Holy cow, I hadn't realized anybody was still asking that price - that's what it was *eight years ago* when a Bundle III was a few grand. If that's not an error, that price seriously needs updating to reflect current market realities, in a time where entire Bundle IIIs including a transferrable license for 3.0 software are trading hands for not much more than that $295.

Until this is addressed my recommendation is to bide your time and watch the classifieds here. Find a used Bundle III with 3.0 software included for not much more, and transfer the 3.0 license, thereby getting 3.0 *and* an entire second PARIS rig thrown in for little more than what you're saying you were quoted for the software alone. Then either integrate the second bundle into your setup, keep it for spares or resell components you don't need in order to recoup part of your purchase price.

Thanks very much for your swift reply to my questions. I will look out for a bundle as advised I thought it was kind of high considering the hardware prices I have seen.
Is it much better than 2.2 in your opinion?
What I read about it excited me but right now I got to watch my spending and get the best bang for the buck just like many others.
Thanks again.

It's a good upgrade, no doubt. But at that frankly unrealistic price, there's simply no value comparison possible between a 3.0 upgrade and an extra EDS card. The latter is half the price of the former yet *doubles* both your track count and your FX processing; until that pricing is revised, that's where the bang for the buck will remain.

ID, if you're reading this - flip over to the classifieds here to help put the situation in perspective. I'll contact ID directly about this after this crazy weekend is over.

Keep your eyes on the classifieds; you might even consider posting a "Wanted" ad. As far as the sound - your ears are telling you the same thing our ears tell us about our own PARIS rigs, they're something a bit more special than your average DAW Very Happy

There are two reasons to buy 3.0 that people dont think about often.

1. There is a bug in the effects pulldown list under older versions of paris, and it wont show eds plugs much beyond the ones included in paris. So you can add all mikes new plugs but not be able to select them.

2. RENDERING. 3.0 offers a really quick way to render to file.

On XP, v2.1 had an aux bleed issue. v3.0 does not. I don't know if Mac's had this problem.

Thanks for the response I have noted with interest your points. Where might one be able to obtain these "Mikes Plugs"?

Check the Mike Audet link at the very top of this page - Mike has taken up the PARIS coding banner from Chuck's great Skunkworks, and put out a wide range of new (and very high quality) plugins for your EDS slots. In addition, he's released new drivers that have given PARIS an entirely new lease on life. Mike's been on fire future-proofing PARIS lately - his current task is rewriting the ASIO drivers, which is going to open a lot of new doors.

Another reason to go with 3.0 is the ability to group faders...I find this handy.

Cheers

Thanks for the tip Kris I guess now I just need to find me someone with a bundle 3 to sell in the U.S.
I would rather get some hardware and software as opposed to just paying $295 for the software.
Thanks go out to all you guys who have posted in response to my question it is much appreciated.
