Check out BMI or ASCAP - songs that are in public domain are the only ones
that qualify. I don't think Happy Birthday is in public domain. God Bless
America may be, until it becomes illegal to sing altogether. Here is one
list, though not official by any means: http://www.pdmusic.org/
The copyright issue is getting stickier all the time, and don't look for it
to get better. I've heard of large companies suing small video producers
over a product usage (with visible name) that wasn't cleared first. Even
"free advertising" isn't a viable alternative to copyright clearance. We
are a law suit frenzied society with more lawyers than common sense.
All that to say, if it isn't listed on as public domain on BMI or ASCAP,
don't try it without a written agreement from the publisher. Some songs are

significant fee up front (older and/or lesser known songs are probably

Classical "crap"? Most of it is public domain.

I think it was Classical Bass (Mason liked to fish, though I don't think
there's much decent fishing in Texas or Oklahoma).
I don't think his song is pd yet, but it's getting old enough...

I've got a new client here who sells *lots* (as in the mid-high six figures)
of instructional videos. He has been having to pay royalties on the music.
He's contracted with a producer buddy of mine to purchase original music
that we're going to write and record here. I'm pretty sure that he would be
all over the freebies if there was much of it that was to his
liking/appropriate for his particular needs. I'm also thinking that an
upgrade to Menudo may be in my future, depending on how much sync to video
I'm going to need to be doing here. Actually, I'm in love with FCP, but it's
Mac based and I don't want to hiutch my wagon to the Mac money pit,......at
least, just yet.
