OK, audio snobs, question for you. In the 'studio' where we're recording now
we have a slew of various mixers, audio interfaces, and other recording detritus.
For various reasons of routing, and especially monitoring with multiple speakers,
the easiest device to use would be an original MOTU 828 for monitoring and
line level converters, I'm using outboard pres for everything. All tracks
are being done at 44.1.
The other options are a Presonus firewire interface which would be a slightly
greater pain in the ass, and with a little money splashed around an original
Multiface I have lying about and a PCI card (which I'd have to buy). Remember,
we're just talking line level converters and monitoring. Opinions?

Monitoring affects all your tone decisions while recording and mixing...
Get the multiface running... and use a passive volume control for
monitor levels.

Do you have experience with the 828 that leads you to believe it's actually
bad, or is this just an 'in theory you should use the best converters possible?'

While I have not used the 828 personally, I know people here in town
that have replaced them due to mediocre converters. And yes, you SHOULD
use the best convertors possible for for monitoring! :-)
