I just got an email from a friend that saw EVH at the Fender booth at NAMM.
He said that he can't even play any more, that it broke his heart to see
and hear it. EVH was his hero. He said it was sooo sad. He said that he
is still in shock over it.

Drugs and alcohol kill!!!!

A good bout of cancer can take the wind right out of your sails as well.
Didn't he get some kind of cancer of the gums from dipping snuff?

A real shame.

Randy Jackson once told me about EVH. Back when the DLR reunion meltdown
thing happened, EVH used the excuse that he couldn't tour because he needed
hip replacement surgery. EVH said that nobody was going to pressure him
in to getting surgery, that it was a personal decision. The rumor, was that
EVH liked the pain killers too much to get surgery. It was believed that
he was hooked and incapable of functioning/ and performing at the time.

Cancer and chemotherapy will screw you up. Meth will also screw up your
teeth and gums, not to mention, give you that dead corpse zombie look. Looks
like he is wearing makeup on the GuitarWorld cover.

Vary sad!

It's ain't so.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIr-WBZT1MI

He seems to be playing ok to me. He is in bad shape though, no doubt
about it. The clips of him that were on the Fender site have been taken
down. I had to find a copy on you tube...

I think he said some things that were not so...

Anyway, we all hate to see this happen to someone so talented, yet
dope and drink still have this cache of hipness... amazing really.

James. back in 2001
James,
back in 2001 @ Namm show, one of the funk gods and my Bass mentor Louis (thunder
Thumbs)Johnson of The BROTHERS JOHNSONS. Man the guy has lost all of that
great slapping/thumping. He looked lost. His amazingg tone was gone. He was'nt
even playing his signature bass (Music Man) stingray...It really hurt my
heart to see him like this.He too got on drugs..But he is clean now, but
the skills have deminished...sad.

Brothers Johnson were a big influence on me! I have a couple Star Licks
instructional videos with Louis on them. In the first one, he looks young
and happy and he plays very well. In the second, he looks old and used
up... Sigh...

After watching the video I can see why people were not impressed and felt
let down by his playing, and his appearance. I think the video is kind of
sad, not the old/young EVH.

Maybe that's a part of it none of us wants to concede. He is a lot older
now.

He still smokes, and blames his cancer on guitar picks.
