Howdy.

I need to buy a copy of XP, and the OEM version is nicely inexpensive. Does
Microsoft slap any weird penalties on the home user for buying an OEM
version? Less customer support or something?

Thanks.
Jimmy

I don't think it's legal. Oem software can only come from the OEM if i'm
correct.

Hi Jimmy,
To buy it legally you have to buy it with some computer hardware i.e.,
mobo, ram, cpu, hd, cd, floppy, ps, etc.

You might as well buy the retail copy at that point.

If you can ,get the student discounted version. I paid $90 for xp pro and
dont see any difference. came with sp 2. all the online updates have been
downloading. I dont think there is any difference except the price.unless im
missing something.I didnt have to jump through any hoops either.

The OEM version just comes in a plain brown wrapper with no docs. I
bought my copy of XP Pro at a Mac reseller for $150...

Legally, it is as Chris is saying and you need a clean harddisk to get it
installed(an old formatted is also OK). Plenty here that's buying it with a
lowcost mouse. You can also buy an upgrade version if you have an old
Win98/ME version on a CD. As I can see, it's about the same prices here in
Norway.
