Oh, and I forgot to mention, the SDC's are panned opposite from
the TLM-103's in the mix, and at a slightly lower volume level.

So do you have all the spot mics panned center and just the room mics panned
wide?

Brandon, no not at all... there's not much panned dead-center, in
fact. All the keys except for the solo synth parts are stereo,
the rhythm guitars are all double-tracked & panned L&R, same for
the toms & OH's - BG vox aren't hard-panned, but there's like 4
tracks of 'em, and they each have a few degrees of spread; the
HiHat is very slightly to one side, too. Kick, snare, bass, lead
vox & solo guitar & synth are about the only things center-
panned.

No, the kick & snare are centered, the hat's close, but not
"quite" centered, and the toms are all panned in an array...
check the tom fill at about 1:08, for example... if you're not
hearing them going from one side to the other in that fill, then
you're listening in mono or something.

Ah, must be something funky with the .mp3 compression / center cut filter.
When I listen to just the center material I hear more toms than
when I listen to the left and right sources.

And by the "Mike Stone Effect", I mean just listen to the first two
Asia albums and Whitesnake's followup to "Slide It In". "Slide" was
produced by Martin Birch, a guy who knew how to get that sound.
"Whitesnake" was produced by Stone, who completely glossed up and
neutered the whole damn thing.
I would pay good money to have anyone else remix the first two Asia
albums, since I know Wetton's bass is in there somewhere. And they
had Carl Freakin' Palmer on drums! Apparently without a kick...
I'd love to hear more of the new stuff when you feel like doling it
out, Neil.

I agree Paul. I loved the songs on those Asia albums, but they sound like
complete crap! I also think in general, they were way to reverb heavy. I
would love it if someone would do a good "proper" remix.

Yep.
I'm sure part of it was Downes as well...
I saw them on the first tour. They played a new song they'd been
working on called "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes".
Wetton doing just vox. Palmer standing up front playing a simple
pattern on some sort of drum machine (based on the era, probably a
Linn), Downes playing piano, and Howe playing acoustic.
Simple, beautiful. Stunning song. Couldn't wait for it to be
recorded.
Then "Alpha" got released, and I was shocked. Saddened. Infuritated.
"Smile" had become a bloated, overblown, overhyped, overproduced,
overorchestrated piece of keyboard-and bell-laden bombast. The
stunningly simple song I fell in love with was completely gone. Never
forgave them for that.
Too bad bootlegging technology of the time involved sneaking a tiny
cassette recorded under your coat - in the current era of DAT and CF
recorders and hi-performance condensers, I'd pay good money for a copy
of that concert.
