Ordered a Project Card & an A16Ultra.
Hopefully will have a report for y'all by the weekend (I assume
they'll get here & I'll have time to do all the install & tweak
routines by then), and unlike Deej - whose reports have been
known to consist of: FRIDAY: "WOW THIS THING IS FUCKING GREAT!"
followed by: SUNDAY: "OK, IT SUCKS, I SHITCANNED IT!", my
assessments will be a little more cautious.

DJ, I'm interested in your opinion on the plug ins that come with the scope
cards. That is , when you have enough time in on them to form an opinion.
I just ordered a RME madi system to replace my digiface so it wouldnt be for
interface use.
My interest would be if it is worth it for the plug ins,and 14 sharc's is
tempting.I have 2 powercores and a UAD-1 working together now.I dont need
more of the same.

- HD video at the same time
- VST and Rewire support (run from host cpu) - run over 64 bridge channels
from host apps into the CC-1 engine/mixer
- the possibility (depending on 3rd party implementation) for VST plugins to
run locally on the card
- very very low latency (0.1-0.5ms with full processing)
- scalable on massive proportions
- combines floating point and fixed point depending on what provides the
best audio quality (16-bit float metering to save processing, 72 bit EQ
where it counts the most, 36-bit float mixing, etc)
- MADI I/O
- Direct controller support for Dream II systems
- reported to have more DSP power than 8 PTHD Accel cards
The software app to edit and mix with is quite spartan, but I'm hoping
Steinberg will get on board and develop direct support (the card can be used
by most any media app as a processing resource if developed to do so). Not
holding my breath, but hoping at least. This card is aimed directly at PTHD
post installs, and could kill it if they get serious 3rd party support.
Even without it, just running all audio/video off of the card would free up
tons of processing for the host cpu for Rewire apps, VST plugins, VSTi's,
etc.
It isn't yet clear if you can run it without the SX20 I/O sync box (e.g.
with any MADI to other I/O box - I've emailed them to find out). The base
system includes the Satellite AV controller, CC-1 card and SX20 I/O box -
$20k total. I just want the card and an RME MADI unit....
It ain't cheap, but it's a serious boatload of dsp power.

I'm hoping it lives up to its' potential. Heck, if I had the money I
wouldn't mind a Constellation or Anthem console to go with it... :-)
While I've heard good arguments on the pros and cons of dedicated dsp
systems vs. the impending power surge of native systems (e.g. quad cores out
by the end of the year, octo cores next year), this seems like a system that
could easily grow and adapt with host apps. The gains of a dual or quad
octo core would just go to host-based plugins and apps, with the card
handling all of audio/video streaming and mixing, and still far exceeding
what most music production facilities should ever need for many years to
come (film mixes for sure could push 200 tracks - hence the market for a
network of these).
I like the idea of getting all of this (audio, mixing, HD/SD video streaming
and I/O) in a stable single card system, but with the capability to
interface with host apps and plugins - hopefully with fewer headaches than
trying to cobble together the same functions with Decklink, RME, and
multiple DSP cards, etc (though being able to the UAD-1s in the mix is still
a nice bonus).

Sorry Neil. It's been a crappy day. I've been dealing with some *day job*
stuff here that is making me see red right now. Someone basically tried to
slander me today, accusing me of threatening them when all I did was tell
them a truth they didn't happen to want to hear. I'm probably going be

The most basic system with I/O and Satellite controller is about 18,500USD.
A card only option is not under consideration at this time.

I just need to chill out. I'm usually pretty slow to anger. Once I'm there,
I'm also pretty slow to chill. I could use some improvement in that
department. Being pissed off uses lots of energy that could be better
directed.
We'll see what kind of attitude a new morning brings about.

I don't think Fairlight have "ever" fitted into the mainstream. I was working
in a studio in Manila, Phillipines, with the Fairlight CMI (Computer Musical
Instrument) in the late 1980's -was nothing like it at that time. These folks
think outside the square, CMI was way ahead of it's time. Prices are not
too high compare to PTHD, which I think they are aiming against. It would
be interesting to see how this goes in the market place.
