You can get most of the same effect using standard M/S techniques, but both
the Behringer Edison and the BASE, seem to be more effective with better
mono compatibility.
I have used the two units primarily for two types of effects.
1. Reduced center on reverb returns: This can help to take the wash out of
the center and still leave relatively long but unobtrusive tails at the L/R
points or “super” L/R – (outside the normal stereo spread - see number 2)
2. To make sections of the song extend outside the normal stereo field. I
generally apply this sound to large vocal chorus sections or occasionally
to the main reverb return but only on the chorus sections. Stereo room mics
on drums or other instruments also can be effective in this mode. Applying
this to binaural mic recording can do some very wild things (a personal favorite)
although mono compatibility can go away in a hurry.
The BASE implanted its own special sound that was reminiscent of a good tube
unit or Class A Neve. Very smooth and delicious.
I did use the BASE across the stereo buss on a few mixes, but I have not
been happy with the Edison in this capacity.

Geno, which BASE version do you have? The one with the
unbalanced, or balanced i/o's?
Also, do you have the users' manual for it?

Thank you Gene. That's some good info. I have used certain spatializer
plugins in the past but didn't really care for what they did. I didn't use
them in the same way you are describing though. Your methodology tips are
appreciated.

Yup, $6k, but sold it to you for $3k if you promised to include
the BASE logo on every release you used it on (like Aphex did
with the original Exciters).
