URGENT: NEED SOME SHORT 16 and 24-bit PAFS at 48k and 44.1k for testing! [message #102798] |
Wed, 11 March 2009 16:59 |
|
And here I am with my rig not set up yet.
Can anyone create some short (5 - 15 sec) PAF audio clips from within PARIS (this is very important, as converted PAFs are slightly different than PARIS-created pafs) and attach them here for testing?
Format - say two sample files for each of the following:
16 bit 44.1
24 bit 44.1
16 bit 48k
24 bit 48k.
If you can stick 'em in a folder, zip 'em and upload them here, that'd be great.
What would be really ideal is for both a Mac PARIS user and a PC PARIS user to upload a set created in their respective rigs. That way we'll be certain the version of PAF compatibility we're creating is completely backwards-compatible with both platforms.
Thanks in advance!

Well, this is *very* interesting. Xenakios reckons he may have found a
serious bug concerning 24-bit PAFs in libsndfile, which is the free,
open-source library that developers can turn to to build PAF support from.
If this is the case, and libsndfile *can't* make reliable 24-bit PAF files,
then that's a very important breakthrough because it will mean anything
built from it will be half-baked. And one of my *next* steps after this
involves contacting developers of file translation software about PAF
support. If libsnd is broken, I need to make sure the developer is made
aware of it and fixes it so folks cooperating with us don't need to wrestle
with it.
So - who's got some PARIS files for testing this out so we can quickly
arrive at a definitive diagnosis? I'd ideally love to see them tonight if
possible.

No rig where I sit at the moment..... :(
However, I can make an attempt tomorrow evening, day gig allowing me time to
do so. You've got my number still I assume... gimme a shout tomorrow around
6 pm Central Time. I'm recovering a nasty flu bug though, so don't wait too
late to ring me as I'll be in Nyquil dreamy time. Momma said knock me out
and all.
If I can get 1/2 hr in front of my Paris I'll make you what you want on PC
platform.. I assume someone Mac will step up on the Apple side.
I do remember Edmund talking about how PAF is really just a WAV format with
less header information. I always thought it was pretty wierd though that
the file length actually changed when running through StripWav a PAF from
Wavelab to Paris. There is a check box in Wavelab that removed 'extra info'
of some sort. Dunno if any of that is useful or not.

Kerry I can run some files on Mac tomorrow morning.
I also noticed some weirdness when looking at waveforms in Snapper before
and after a transcode from .paf to .sd2

You guys both rock - and *very* interesting observations. There's no denying there's always been something a little funky about PAF. "Pure" wav, if I recall, is how Edmund characterized PAF.
It'd be pretty interesting to find we'd been dealing with the manifestations of a broken PAF library having been out there for a long time - and we might never have got the source pinned down if people hadn't started to talk to each other about it. Anyway, we'll finally get to the bottom of it very soon. With guys like the Reaper team running their eyes over it, we may be able to strip some smoke and mirrors and bafflegab away from PARIS shortly, and learn things about it that we never knew before. I can live with a little less mystery and secrecy. AA, talk to you tomorrow - get well man, I just got over that abomination of a flu/cold (I've been calling it Coldzilla).

Kerry, tell me where you want these files. I have:
1x blank ppj
1x test ppj, where I created the following files
1x 44.1 16 bit file, PAF format created in Paris
1x 44.1 24 bit file, PAF format created in Paris
1x 48 16 bit file, PAF format created in Paris
1x 48 24 bit file, PAF format created in Paris
They're between 10 and 15 seconds long, and are not in perfect sync with the
audio. Basically, I set up the rates and pushed record while pushing 'demo'
mode on my DmPro. All files created in Paris and untouched otherwise on a PC
platform. Uncompressed, the whole lot is a touch over 9 MB.

So sorry to take this long to get the files to you. I've emailed you with

AA, you are the MAN! Ted came through as well - so now we have a Mac and a PC version, at 44.1 and 48 and at 16 and 24 bit, for Xenakios to test thoroughly. By the way, check the Reaper thread, Xenakios has already posted the first version of the Reaper extension, working at 16 bit, for you to try out at your leisure.
If you want to send them to me, a service like Dropload or YouSendIt http://www.yousendit.com/ would get anything up to 100 meg here to me, and then I could post it on my FTP site for Xenakios - but Reaper has its own quasi-FTP site you can use to share Reaper-related resources (this seems to qualify) at http://stash.reaper.fm/ if you want to check that out (never used it myself but it looks great, and then the files are "in the system" so to speak).
If it's OK with you guys I might keep the test files from both you and Ted served on the Wiki - I'm going to ask some file conversion folks to spiff up their paf support soon too, and a selection of files would come in handy for that.

OK guys - don't know if you're following the Reaper Forums thread, but if you aren't, Xenakios asked me to contact Erik de Castro Lopo, developer of libsndfile, which I've done; Erik got back to me right away and I've passed him over to Xenakios for a more detailed explanation of the putative bug in libsndfile. More info as I have it.
