Hey Thad or anyone, check out this new feature in Pro Tools 'Elastic Audio'.
Yeah yeah, on the surface it lloks like ACID meets Ableton Live, but as you
get deeper into the video(15 minutes), you start seesing some really powerful
editing stuff.
This new Elastic Audio feature will replace their Beat-Detective feature
which was already a powerful tool for Drum editing..

It does semm a bit ironic that Digi is the Majority stock holder of Avid.
Being that most Pro Tools users are Mac users :)
They (PT) Mac users have no idea that their app is owned by Bill Gates..

Interesting stuff, LaMont, just had a chance to watch it. I still think that
there is something really special about Live I've never found in another
audio app. It's a mindset, a degree of predictability within the program,
when you reach for a button or knob or control it's right where you expect
it to be, even if you didn't know where it was going to be. Still this is
cool tech. I often wonder what I'll do if I ever quit using Steinberg software,
and at this point I'd probably go with PT at whatever is their cheapest HD
card rig. Digi certainly seems to have realized that the synth/sample/DJ
set has a few coins to scratch together and seems to be willing to put some
effort into features we can use. Maybe they finally noticed at Frankfurt
Messe that even the elevator music is techno.

Thad, I agree with you about Live uniqueness. I also feel that with the upcomming
release of Live 7, that's goinf to push alot of users to that DAW. That (Live
7)is Sweet!! . I few more updates(Not that need any), Live can compete with
and even surpass he big boys..
My question is: Since Ableton is under he Avid umbrella, will LIve version
8 compete with PT LE..MPowered OR, does live speak to a completely differnt
audience not matter how many DAW like features is gets?

more likely, avid will split the features leaving you wanting for either
side that can be found on whatever the other is.

Hey LaMont,
I could be wrong, but I don't think the relationship between Ableton and
Digi is all that close. Yes, Digi is bundling essentially Live LE with PT,
but I think the appearance of Ableton being under Digi's umbrella was the
fact that for a few years Live was distributed in the US by M-Audio who were
actually bought out by Digi. My understanding is that Ableton is back to
distributing themselves in the US and that their relationship with Digi is
of mutual consent. I.e. if Digi wants M-Audio to do X they do it, while if
Digi wants Ableton to do X they can ask and cajole but it's still Ableton's
to take or leave.
As an aside, one of the things European software companies complain about
most bitterly is the was US distribution is done. There are a lot of reason
why they complain but in pretty much every case they think they get screwed.
I think a lot of them would like to go to download only if they could, but
the size of the downloads are just too much still.

It wouldn't surprise me if Digi licensed the tech from Ableton, that kind
of deal makes sense. But I have some personal knowledge of the Ableton principals
and they seem to have pretty sharp business minds, so I doubt they'd sell
the code base to Digi for cheap. Then again, I could be wrong about all of
this, but one of the reassuring things about Ableton is that they've been
smart and savvy about how they're growing the company.
Then again, I could be wrong about all of this and maybe they'll pull a Steinberg
or an Emagic and cash in at the right moment and leave their users in limbo
for a few years.
