If I bought one of these, I would need it to do the following:

Provide me 24 AD/DA converters for tracking and interfacing outboard gear at
mixdown while allowing the summing of ADAT inputs from my 3 x RME HDSP
9652's plus an additional 8 x stereo AES I/O for interfacing my digital
outboard gear and Mytek stereo AD/DA's
.....so I would need simultaneous access at mixdown to:

24 analog I/O

48 ADAT I/O (I really would only need the ADAT inputs for input streaming to
sum in the DM2000.

8 x AES I/O

80 total I/O

Is it possible to configure a DM 2000 like this? Do I even need the RME
cards...IOW....can the DM2000 function as an audio interface like the Tascam
DM4800 does?

I'm seriously entertaining the idea of getting a large digital mixer. If I
had something like the DM2000, I could lose all sorts of stuff, like my
Furman HDS-16 system, a digital patchbay, a Houston controller, a Multiface
PCI system, two RME ADI8-DS units and I could also sacrifice a few outboard
preamps if the DM2000's pres are as good as I hear and te AD/DA converters
are good as well.

How would I spec something like this out?

Dave????........anyone???

Thanks,

Deej

Hey DJ, since I work on the DM 2000 frequently and hightly recommend as as
first rate mixer, DAW controller (Nuendo, SX, PT, Logic and Sonar). Highly
flexible routing. Some of the best on board Mic Pre-amp (Full bodied..non
color) you will find.

-8 SPX1000's..
-96 channels @ 96k..

To the point... YES to all of you questions...

Now, Since you run SX, and since Yammy own steinberg, the hooks bw the DM
and SX are deep.. Very Deep.

So, deep that your DAW options are many...:

-DAW RME 9652..into DM-2000...(via adat

-DAW-Firwire....Into DM 2000.(M-Lan firewire

-DAW RME MADI...DM 2000 MADi..Right now expesive. But, yammy is developing
their own cheaper madi interface for the DM..

-Version 2 software introduces their analog modeling fx..Nice..However, they
replace the 8 verbs ..

Bootom line ..Great move.. The combo of Nuendo/SX withthe DM 2000 is at top
of the DAW pile..HOWEVER!!! :)

There's competition from Tascam.. Yes Tascam.. for a saving sof 15k .. You
can get the Tascam DM 4800..Killer unit.. ZGood Pre's (24) Nice Eq..comps/gates
on eevry channel..

Very DAW controll (SX/Nuendo, Logic, Pro Tools, Sonar
Can be used with your RME's..via adat...OR via their 32 i/o Firwire card..$around
5k..

So there you have it..

You can use up to 6 cards in the DM so something like this would work.
2 xMY8-AE96
4x MY16-AT

It has a forewore option but liek the Tascam it is usless and buggy.
Limited I/O, High latency.

Depending on how extensively you use the Houston the DM-2000 iwill be
very limited in comparison.

Do you want the 48 ADAT to be going to/from the computer? The RME Madi
PCI card is still the most logical way to to do this IMHO.

Hey Chris, the Sudio with the DM 2000 has 48 adat channels (Pro Tools HD)
going to the Mac-DAW..Works and sound great.

P.S.
You can hear the differnce in when Suming via the DM versus via Digi 192s
and RME 9552..

Take a look.. http://www.lamourrecording.com/

DJ:

I love the DM2000 as a concept - haven't touched one personally yet (you
need to talk to Dave about that), but it is a very powerful beast with
big bang for the buck.

yamahaproaudio.com has downloadable manuals and block diagrams for all
their products for your perusal...

Here is what I do know:

comes with 24 mic/line inputs, 8 analog "omni" line outs, which are
assignable to any console output signal, and 2 analog stereo I/O, plus 3
stereo digital I/O, 2 - AES, 1 - SPDIF, assignable as well.

comes with 6 empty I/O slots designed to take the "MY..." series of I/O
cards - ADAT, AES, mlan, MADI (3rd party sale), analog line (96K
capable), etc. list of these available at Yamaha web site, also...

There are 20 busses: stereo, mix bus 1-8, aux bus 1-12. There are 96
input channels, each with a dedicated direct out in firmware. The
direct out is assignable pre or post EQ/fader.

Any physical input or bus can be assigned to any mixer channel, any
mixer output can be assigned to virtually any physical output. The
board is one big router.

There are 96 I/O available in firmware, you just have to add I/O modules
to service them.

Yes, computer audio I/O is needed - I don't trust mlan at all...

"Remote Layer" has built-in support for remote control of PT, Nuendo,
Cubase, at a reasonable level. Not as deep as your Houston, but very
few controllers are...

Also, MMC transport control for DAW is standard, as well as RS422 (Sony
P2) serial control for driving VTR's, and SMPTE time code read/generate.

Full mixdown automation is standard, as well as full setup/routing
presets, saved to internal memory, flash card or ext Studio Manager pgm
via USB.

5.1 monitoring control is standard in the CR section, as well.

Mic pre's and AD/DA conv are critically approved, whatever that means...

Built-in EFX are usable, but you might want to keep your UAD's, etc. -
again, see web site.

> How would I spec something like this out?
>

1 - DM2000 base console
1 - Meter bridge
3 - MY16-AT 16 I/O ADAT format slot cards
1 - MY16-AES 16 I/O AES format slot card (this gives you 8 spare AES I/O)
1 (or 2) 8 I/O analog cards (not sure of the MY... number)

1 slot leftover for the inevitable expansion....

AES and ADAT I/O count is halved at FS above 48K, console channel count
and internal DSP proc is not. Throughput latency is halved at 96K FS.

Call your local dealer, or find one at the Yamaha web site. I think
Sweetwater is a dealer for this line, for starters.
EBay is another source (I know - duh!)

HI Lamont,
They are only developing a MY -MADI option card to make it easier to
connect to a RME card. They are not developing a PC sound card.
Audio Service is the company that make the MY-MADI currently and they
are charging over $3000 for it. I tis cheaper and more flexible to get a
RME MADI card and the RME ADI-648 and them use the MY-ADAT cards in the
console.

Hi Lamont,
Yes the DM2000 does sound great. The way the Yamaha studio Manager
software works inside of Cubase/Nuendo is awesome. Why easier than using
its built-in screen to do stuff.
I think DJ might have some issues with using the DM2000 as compared to
his Houston mainly because some of the extra belles and whistles that
I've only seen the Mackie and Houston do.
But otherwise I think the DM would be a breath of fresh air for him.

You have 24 analog ins and 8 "omni outs" (assignable as anything) in
addition to all your monitoring and 2T sends/returns

Add 1 MY8-DA96 for an additional 8 analog outs to get 16.

You need 4 MY16AT cards for this.

>

You need 1 MY16AE (gives you 16 channels) or 1 MY8AE for 8 channels.

>

The above card combo fills the unit. You would be 8 analog out short
of your spec.

Yes, it would be both interface and controller... but you still have
to get in and out of the computer.

This is how we use it here...

Nuendo - 24 channels of ADAT I/O from HDSP9652 to/from DM2K
Protools - 24 channels of ADAT I/O from 192 I/O
Paris - 16 channels of ADAT I/O from MEC

*All* connected to MY16AT cards on the DM2K

Connect it to the analog outs of the DM to use while tracking.

, a digital patchbay

Built in to the DM

, a Houston controller

The DM has more functionality.

, a Multiface
> PCI system

You won't need it.

, two RME ADI8-DS units

These can be interfaced to the ADAT ports for more analog I/O (I use

The pre's are really good... but it's still good to have more
flavour. You can use one of the 8IO's for different convertor flavor

Call me... ;-) Better yet, catch a plane! :-)

I think your rig can be streamlined once you get a workflow going with
the console. You are doing some really complicated routing that
shouldn't be neccisary. Just make sure if you buy one, to get a
Version 2 model... or you will have to upgrage it. This is all
assuming a max sample rate of 48K... go to 96K and this all goes out
the window...
